Grammar Made Easy: Writing a Step Above
Friendly Grammar for Your
Students!
If yearly grammar workbooks haven’t improved your students’ writing and you are looking for a better way to teach higher-order sentence structure, Grammar Made Easy (formerly known as Writing a Step Above) is the book for you.
The brief, scripted lessons and carefully constructed exercises build skills gently, precept upon precept, line upon line. Grammar Made Easy is designed for multi-level use (grades 6 -12) AND for individualized instruction, as well as traditional teacher-directed class work.
Lessons typically require 10 minutes of class time for instruction and guided practice. Then students spend roughly 10 minutes in independent work (usually called homework). When they return the next day, the lesson is reviewed before moving on.
Chapters include:
- an explanation of the sentence pattern being studied (beginning with the simple subject-verb sentence and going up to noun clauses and nominative absolutes)
- a table with suggested activities (essentially, a schedule of work for the chapter)
- 3 guided practice exercises
- an example of diagramming
- 5 sentence combining exercises
This strategy has been shown to improve students’ writing skills by 2-4 grade equivalencies during one year of instruction. It works wonders with my students, and I’m certain it’ll do the same for yours.
